Harvard Professor Amy C. Edmondson joins Starling’s Academic Advisory Board

16th Dec, 2020

Starling, a globally recognized Regtech pioneer, has announced the appointment of Professor Amy C. Edmondson to its Academic Advisory Board.

Professor Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School, a chair established to support study of human interactions that lead to the creation of successful enterprises and the betterment of society. She studies leadership, psychological safety, and organizational learning.

Edmondson’s articles have appeared in numerous academic and management journals, among them: Administrative Science Quarterly; Academy of Management Journal; Harvard Business Review; and California Management Review. Her most recent book, The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation and Growth, was translated into 11 languages, and offers a practical guide for organizations serious about success in the modern economy.

“In an increasingly uncertain world, organizational culture emerges as a crucial determinant of effective risk management,” Edmondson said. “When anyone’s voice can be mission-critical, it’s imperative that people are willing to take on the interpersonal cost of speaking up to raise concerns and questions as a means of identifying problems immediately, before they cause physical or economic harm,” she argued. “However, organizations with healthy cultures marked by learning and transparency are rare,” Edmondson laments. “All too often, firms offer the illusion of good performance, for a time, only to have that illusion punctured when information that had been hidden comes to light.” For that reason,” she added, “I am excited to help further Starling’s approach to evaluating organizational culture, and other aspects of corporate governance, as a means of helping firms to produce trustworthy performance over time,” Edmondson concluded.

“We could not be prouder that Amy has agreed to join our remarkable advisory team,” said Starling founder and CEO, Stephen Scott. “In recent years, executives and regulators in the financial sector have joined countless leaders from other industries in recognizing the importance of psychological safety to creating and sustaining ‘speak up cultures’ that promote innovation, optimal team performance, and reduced operational risks,” Scott added. “We count ourselves – and our customers – incredibly fortunate to benefit by Amy’s deep study into the key drivers of organizational excellence and high-performance and I am thrilled to work with and to learn from her.”
